Team DC Final Roster Announced
The final roster of players that will represent Team DC at the USA Hockey America's Showcase April 14-18 in Pittsburgh has been announced, with the team holding its first practice today Monday, March 28, at the Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD. The team consists of high school juniors and seniors representing various programs from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.
"We are very excited about the quality of the team we have been able to assemble," said Team DC General Manager Tony MacAulay, who is the head coach at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, MD. "We had a really deep group of players to choose from, with more than 50 players attending tryouts, and some of the final decisions were extremely difficult. We ended up with a great representation of public school and private school, as well as top club players, from all over the area. I think that's what I am most proud of and excited about."
The 2016 version of Team DC, MacAulay's sixth entry in the event, features 18 skaters -- 12 forwards and six defensemen -- and two goaltenders representing 12 private schools and eight public-school programs from the DMV area. In addition four alternates, who will participate in all three of the team's practices, have been selected as well.
Not only are local high schools well represented on Team DC, but there also are four members of the 18U Maryland state Tier 2 club-champion Tri-City Eagles and four members of the Chesapeake Bay Hockey League 18U regular-season champion and Maryland State Tier 2 runner-up Howard Huskies on the roster. Those two teams will be competing in the USA Hockey Tier 2 national championship tournament starting March 31 in Amherst, N.Y., along with Team DC players from the Ashburn Xtreme 16U and Reston Raiders 18U AA teams that captured Virginia Tier 2 titles and also will be heading to Nationals in New Jersey and Amherst, respectively. All told Team DC features no fewer than 10 players heading to USA Hockey National Championship events.
Serving as head coach for Team DC will be Rob Trantin, the head coach at Archbishop Spalding and the assistant hockey director and 16U AA head coach for Tri-City of the CBHL. Trantin will be assisted on the bench by Towson University Head Coach Ed Slusher.
Team DC opens play in Pool B at America's Hockey Showcase on Thursday, April 14 at 8 a.m. in a game against New York before taking on Massachusetts at 1 p.m. April 15 and Washington at 1pm April 16. The consolation and playoff rounds are slated for April 17 and 18.
