2018 Team DC Roster Announced
The roster for the 2018 edition of Team DC, which will compete in America's Showcase St. Louis, has been finalized and posted on the team website, General Manager Tony MacAulay announced today. Team DC will compete in the annual USA Hockey-sanctioned national high school tournament April 19-23 at St. Peter's Rec-Plex in St. Peter's, Mo.
This year's 20-payer roster features 11 juniors and nine seniors, compared to last year's veteran squad that had just five juniors and 15 seniors. Retuning from last year's team are senior All-MAPHL defenseman Wyatt Hinkson of DeMatha/Team Maryland 18U AAA, senior honorable mention All-Met defenseman Tiger Bjornlund of Walt Whitman/Montgomery 18U AA and senior All-MAPHL forward Liam Eden of Spalding/Tri-City 18U AA.
Team DC went 3-1 and was one of the top teams in terms of offensive production at last year's showcase in Pittsburgh. This year's team should be much deeper defensively, and while it may not have the top-end star power up front, the forward group appears to be deeper and more consistent top to bottom than last year's.
"We are really happy with the group we've been able to put together," head coach Joe Vonakis said. "Usually at tryouts for a team like this you can eliminate 10-12 kids right off the bat. This year, even with 51 players attending tryouts, it was extremely hard for us to eliminate anyone, and the final roster decisions were very difficult. I think we've assembled a very strong team that is solid in all areas with very few weaknesses. Hopefully we can take another step forward and advance to the quarterfinals this year."
Team DC will have two practices, April 12 and 15 at Gardens Ice House in Laurel, before flying to St. Louis April 18. The first game for Team DC is the following day at 10 a.m. Eastern time against Texas. Team DC returns to action on Friday, April 20 against Arizona at 1p.m. Eastern before closing out the preliminary round April 21 at noon Eastern against Florida. The quarterfinals, semifinals and consolation rounds are slated for April 22, with the championship game scheduled to take place the morning of April 23.
All of Team DC's games will be carried live on HockeyTV.com. For more information, including staff bios, news and historical information, please go to the Team DC website.
