Team DC to Compete as Team DMV
Team DC, a high-school showcase team which is made up of the some of the top prep hockey players in the area and competes annually in America’s Showcase St. Louis, has been renamed Team DMV for the 2020 event.
America’s Showcase St. Louis was founded in 1985 and is held each April in hopes of providing the nation’s premier high school players with an opportunity to be scouted by high-level junior and college programs. The event features all-star teams representing more than 20 states and geographic regions and is intended for high school juniors and seniors who hope to continue their hockey careers beyond school and club hockey.
This year’s showcase is scheduled for April 16-20 at the brand new Centene Community Ice Center, the practice home of the Stanley Cup-champion St. Louis Blues.
The name change to Team DMV was made in conjunction with the Potomac Valley Amateur Hockey Association (PVAHA) taking a more active role with the program this year. For the past four years, the area has sent two teams – Team DC and Team Maryland – to the event. Team DC has been comprised of public- and private-school players from all of the local high school leagues, while Team Maryland made up primarily of public-school players from the MSHL.
The goal is to attract more quality players from DC, Maryland and Virginia to Team DMV tryouts in hopes of sending the most competitive team possible to the event. If there is enough interest to field two competitive teams, that option will be strongly considered.
Under the direction of General Manager Tony MacAulay, head coach of DeMatha High School, and assistant GM Scott Lowe of DMVProspects.com, Team DC has made steady progress during the last four years.
In 2019 the team went 3-0 in pool play and advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in recent memory. The number of players trying out has increased each year as has the level of talent in the player pool. The name change and new approach is the next logical step toward attracting the top players in the area and competing for the tournament championship on a regular basis.
“While we are very proud of what we’ve built under the Team DC name, changing the name to Team DMV while working together with PVAHA, MSHL and all of the other local high school leagues to attract the players who truly hope to continue playing after high school should help us to continue advancing the program,” MacAulay said. “We want it to be clear that the team is inclusive of all the leagues in the area and that the goal is to provide as much exposure to as many kids who hope to continue their hockey careers as possible.”
Anyone who currently is a junior or senior and played at least five games for his school’s team is eligible to compete in the showcase. Event rules also stipulate that a team can bring a few players who attend a school that does not have a team. In addition, freshmen and sophomores are welcome to attend tryouts for the exposure and experience, but cannot play in the showcase. They can be selected to practice with the team prior to the event, however.
